Hi,
Well, I wrote a long update during lunch today and emailed it to myself. I was going to copy and paste it in here but...I can't open it on my laptop because it has Vista. Bah...
Whatever... Iwill try to reconstruct it. First of all, I LOVE MY NEW APARTMENT! I've been here for a month already. I spent about 8 weeks in the process of the move. Painting and cleaning here, while packing and cleaning there. I did a lot of box moving and unpacking along the way. The day of the final move, it was pretty much furniture and appliances only. I had trouble with the moving company (Neighbors Moving and Storage out of Somerville, MA). They did a terrible job of transporting my things...damage to many items. Dings, scratches, dents, and more. I'm very unhappy with all of that. They just picked up and hauled things, like workhorses, with total disregard for my personal goods. They also hit me with an additional fuel charge the morning of the move AND told me that they accepted cash only in payment. Huh??? Later, when I was looking at my paperwork for damage claim policies, I found that they accepted cash, money order and bank checks. It was all very shady and I was uncomfortable with the 3 guys that came to my house. I doubt I'll ever see any compensation for the damages.
However, that is all behind me now and I'm thrilled to be here. It needed a lot of work, but the owner has pretty much given me free reign and not charged me anything other than the monthly rent, so I don't mind doing the work or paying for the paint, etc. After all, I hope to be here for a very long time.
During the long weekend last week, I painted the back hallway window, railings, doors, stairs and floors. It's amazing what a can of paint can do to change the appearance of a space. It was NASTY in the hallway and now it looks pretty damned good! Just a little more cleaning out there (the walls), then it will be time to tackle the small porch off the kitchen. Needs a powerwash and the door is a mess. It needs a new screen and it's rusty. Not sure if I'll fix the screen and paint it, or see how much a new one is.
It's so QUIET here! Just me and Barbara downstairs. I can't begin to tell you how relaxed and comfortable I feel here. No kids screaming and running up & down the stairs, no smoke, no squawking bird or thunderous cats at 2AM, no parade of men coming and going. I just love it here. As my son says, I deserve some peace and happiness in my home after 10 yrs of apartment hell. :)
Bella is settling in okay. I accidently shut her in a closet for the whole day on Wednesday. Poor kitty! She didn't make a mess or go to the bathroom in it, thank goodness. I felt so bad though! She was in there from 7:15 - 4:45! Other than that, she is pretty much the same...crazy, aggravating, funny.
I joined a major time sucker website, which might also be why I haven't been writing here much. Facebook. While I'm happy to have reconnected with some old friends, I am spending way too much time on the computer. However, I got the new Elizabeth Berg book today, so I foresee a weekend of reading ahead of me.
Speaking of weekend, I'm taking this one off from anything related to this apartment. Tomorrow, I'm going out to breakfast with Tammy and Linda, then shopping for new shoes and some summer work clothes. And on Sunday, I'm parking myself somewhere with my new book.
Have a great weekend!
Peace,
Kay
